If your car is damaged and needs to get fixed after an accident, you may need a rental car.To get a rental car, you can make a claim through the at-fault driver’s property damage (PD) liability coverage in his or her auto insurance policy. You also have the option of making a claim through your own rental car coverage – if you purchased it.
Below are a few pointers to get the car insurance company to pay for your rental car as fast as possible.
1. Make a Claim
To make a claim to get a rental car, you can either make a claim through your own car insurance or the insurance of the driver (or owner) of the car that was at fault. You need to call (or fax a letter to) the insurance company and tell them that you were involved in a car accident.
2. Give Accident Report to Adjuster
If you have the accident report, you should immediately fax it to the insurance company that you would like to pay for rental car. Be sure to include the claim number which you should have received from the auto insurance company when you set up the claim.
You should have received the accident report from the police officer (or public service aid) that wrote the report.
If you didn’t get the crash report at the time of the auto accident, you should immediately go to the police station (for the city or county) that is making the report and request it. You may need to bring a check to pay for the report. Reports usually cost no more than $10.
After the car insurance company has the accident report, they are much more likely to believe that you were in an auto accident. If you want the insurance for the driver (or owner) that you believe was at fault to pay for your rental car, the insurance company may need to investigate the accident if there are witnesses.
The witness names and contact information should be on the police report.
3. Get Witness Statements
If you can get a witness to write a witness statement stating how the accident happened, you should give this to the insurance company as soon as possible. It is best if you can get the witness to have the statement notarized.
